Income Tax: How to Correct an Error or Missing Information in Your Tax Return?

After receiving your tax notice, you may notice that some information in your income tax return is incorrect or that certain income, expenses, or deductions were not included. Whether you submitted your declaration online or on paper, you may still request corrections under certain conditions.

You submitted your income tax return online

If you filed your return online, you can use the online correction service available from 2 August to 6 December 2023.

To access it:

  1. Log in to your personal account on the official tax website.
  2. Select “Access online correction”.
  3. Update the incorrect information and submit your corrected declaration.

This service is available for taxpayers who filed their return online through the tax website or the Impots.gouv mobile application. It is also available for taxpayers who benefited from the automatic income tax declaration.

Information you can correct online

The online correction service allows you to modify various elements, including:

  • Your dependants
  • Your income details
  • Your deductible expenses
  • Your tax reductions and credits
  • Your real estate wealth tax (IFI) information

You can also add or remove certain supporting declarations if needed.

Information that cannot be changed online

Some details cannot be corrected through the online service, such as:

  • Civil status information
  • Family situation changes (marriage, civil partnership, separation, divorce, death, etc.)
  • Adding or modifying the address of a dependent student
  • Appointing a trusted third party
  • Certain correspondence addresses updated by a legal representative
  • Your tax residence address as of 1 January 2023

How to request changes that cannot be made online?

For these situations, you can:

  • Send an amended paper declaration to your local public finance office, including an explanatory letter and any supporting documents. The declaration must clearly indicate that it replaces and cancels the original online declaration.

or

  • Contact the tax administration through your secure messaging service in your personal account:
“Write” → “I report an error in my tax calculation” → “My request concerns income tax or social security contributions”

You can attach any supporting documents using the document upload option.

After the online correction service closes

Once the correction period has ended, any remaining request must be submitted as a tax claim.

For the 2023 income tax return, claims could be submitted until 31 December 2025 through:

  • The secure messaging system in your personal tax account
  • A written request sent to your public finance office
  • A visit to your local personal income tax department
  • A phone request to your tax office

After your request has been reviewed, the tax administration will issue a corrected tax notice, usually sent within a few weeks.

Important: Online correction of a tax return cannot be completed through a smartphone or tablet.

You Submitted a Paper Tax Return

The online correction service does not apply to declarations submitted on paper.

To make changes, you must contact your personal income tax department either by:

  • Sending a written request
  • Submitting a new paper tax return

If you submit a new declaration, you must write on the first page:

“AMENDED DECLARATION – CANCELS AND REPLACES THE PREVIOUS DECLARATION”

You must complete the entire declaration again, including information that was already correct in your original filing.

After receiving your tax notice, you may submit a claim within the applicable legal deadline.

Obtaining a blank income tax form

If you need a paper tax form (Form 2042), you can:

  • Download and print it from the official tax website by searching for Form 2042
  • Collect it directly from your local public finance office
