You recently got married or entered into a civil partnership (PACS).
If you’ve gotten married or entered a PACS (civil union), you must notify your local tax office within 60 days of the event.
This update should be made online.
Log into your personal account on the official French tax website impots.gouv.fr, and go to the “Manage My Withholding Tax” section.
👉 Access your personal tax space
You’ll need to provide the following details:
The date of your marriage or PACS
Information about your spouse or civil partner (full name, date of birth, and tax ID number)
The new household’s banking details
The total income of your new household
This information will be used to calculate your new withholding tax rate.
Your new rate will then be sent to your employer or any organization that pays you income.
It will take effect no later than two months after the update is submitted.
To better understand how income tax works in France, including the effect of marital status on taxation, you can read our guide on the progressive income tax scale for 2025.
If you’re unable to access the tax portal, you must notify the tax office by mail within 60 days of your marriage or PACS.
📍 Where to send your declaration?
Contact the local tax service in charge of your area (such as the treasury or tax office).
Include the same required details in your letter:
Date of the marriage or PACS
Full details of your spouse or partner (name, birthdate, and tax ID number)
Bank account information for the new household
Total income of the household
These details are necessary to calculate your updated withholding tax rate.
The revised rate will be forwarded to your income payer (e.g., employer or benefits provider), and will take effect within two months of the notification.
For further official guidance, refer to the French government’s service page on declaring a change in family status.
Whether you’re declaring online or by post, updating your marital status is essential to ensure your income tax withholding reflects your new household situation. This helps avoid underpayment or overpayment of taxes throughout the year.
